My father was a pastor and raised me with Christian values. I had a very tender heart for God when I was young; but by the 11th grade, the circumstances in my life began to change, and I began to change. I was angry with life. Everything was going wrong. All of the circumstances I was going through made it easy to leave God out of all of my choices. Four years later, I became pregnant and had to face the reality of all my decisions.

The same friends I partied with said, “Just go get a drink, have an abortion and we will still be partying when you get back.” I didn’t want to talk to my parents because I felt I had already disappointed them so much. They had never said that, but I believed it. I so desperately wanted them to love and approve of me. I didn’t want to talk to my boyfriend, Buddy, either. I felt like this was all my problem. However, I found out very quickly that Buddy didn’t see the baby as a problem — he saw our baby as a life.

Overwhelmed with fear, I was determined to have an abortion. I began calling every abortion clinic looking for the best price; whereas, Buddy began calling lawyers, police and anybody he thought might help to stop the abortion. Buddy quickly learned that since Roe vs. Wade, He had NO VOICE and He had NO CHOICE.

Obstacles
Fortunately, God had put obstacles in my way to slow me down and make me think. He also put stepping stones to direct His path for me.

Buddy was my first obstacle. He wanted to see his baby born, even if that meant parenting the child himself. The second obstacle was money. I had to move fast, as the cost of my abortion was going up weekly and was now up to $600. I was working in the hot sun laying sod for a landscaping company to get the extra money.

My final obstacle was Vicki. As I entered the abortion clinic with my large wad of cash, Vicki stopped me and kindly said, “Are you sure you want to give them your money? God does not want you to do this.” I had already been warned by my friends about Vicki…she had been protesting in front of this abortion clinic for 27 years.

Determined, I went in and gave them my money. During the ultrasound, I asked to see the picture of my baby. The nurse said, “Why would you want to see it? It is not even a baby yet,” and she turned the screen away. I was then taken to another room with about 30 other girls. We watched a video to prepare us for when we returned in 24 hours for the abortion. When Vicki saw me coming out of the clinic, she asked if I had I given them my money? I said, “Yes, but they didn’t let me see my baby.” Vicki saw I was upset and immediately called to arrange for a free ultrasound at the Women’s Resource Center two doors away.

Stepping Stones
Vicki now became my first stepping stone towards a righteous choice. My second stepping stone was the Nurse Manager at the clinic, Deanna, who lovingly talked to me about the dangers of abortion and my options such as adoption and parenting. She said they would stand with me, but the main thing she said that I really heard was that even at 11 weeks God already had a plan for my baby’s life and He had a plan for her at 1 year…5 years…and even 50+ years. She did my second ultrasound that day. But this time, I was shown my baby’s little heart beating, her hands and her feet while Deanna lovingly talked about this little miracle forming in my womb. I cried and cried as my heart was changing, and I was bonding with this tiny life within me. I took the picture home and called her ‘My Little Gummy Bear.’

My next stepping stone was the director of the clinic, Susan. I knew I would need to tell my father, but I was so afraid and ashamed. Ms. Susan had said she would go with me and encouraged me to face my circumstances. She sat beside me as I told my father. Tearfully, he reached his hands across the table, took my hands in his and told me how much he loved me.

Fears
Buddy was thrilled, and I moved forward until a great fear fell over me. What if I had a child with Down Syndrome? What if God would punish me for wanting to have an abortion? The “what ifs” consumed me.

But God knew my fears! I went to an event that featured Deidre Pujols, wife of the baseball all star, Albert Pujols, as its keynote speaker. I love baseball, so Deidre had my attention and she became Stepping Stone #4. As she shared her crisis pregnancy story about how her daughter, Isabelle, was born with Down Syndrome and how much she loved and cherished this special child, I felt my heart change again and my fears melt away. Deidra had given me strength and God’s view of life. I now looked forward to having my baby. God was in control.

Celebrations
I married Buddy and we are the proud parents of our baby girl, Marleigh Marie — born perfectly healthy — on November 29, 2006! Since, our family has grown and we have 2 more beautiful girls Cambelle Anne who is 4 and Sydney Lacey who is 7 months. Thank you Vicki, Deanna, Susan, Deidre and volunteers and supporters of the Women’s Resource Center. And most of all, thank you Jesus, for giving me your beauty and taking my ashes.

Joy visited Women’s Resource Center.

I love Pizza Hut. Typically, if I have a Pizza Hut pizza, it’s a
carryout meal. It’s extremely rare that I will actually dine in. But
yesterday, I had to meet someone in Bay Minette, AL and when
we were finished, my stomach was beginning to speak in full
sentences… FEED ME!

I really wanted a Hardee’s Frisco Burger, but the Bay Minette
restaurant is being re-built and won’t reopen for a while, so I drove
down the highway to look for something else… and that’s when I
saw it. A man standing on the curb in front of Pizza Hut holding a
sign that read “All You Can Eat Buffet, $5.00 TODAY ONLY!”
They had my attention!

Salad, Breadsticks, and unlimited Meat Lover’s pizza was on my
table within three minutes of walking in the door. The voice in my
stomach began to grow quieter. When I returned to the buffet bar
to get some Italian Pasta, I noticed a table of 5 seated in the
corner. Mom, Dad, two boys and a girl. They all seemed to be
having a great time enjoying each other’s company and lots of
pizza. One thing that grabbed my attention is that they were all
drinking water. Not a single soda on the table. That never works
for me… I must have Root Beer when I have pizza. But,
everyone’s different.

My seat was facing their table, and I just kept thinking about their
choice of drinks. I mean, kids don’t normally want water. They
want something sugary! Surely the two boys should be drinking
Mountain Dew at least! I finally deducted that perhaps they were
just trying to save a few bucks and chose water because it’s free.

I got a couple of the cinnamon sticks from the bar, and when I
returned to my table, the server had delivered my check. It was
just over 7 bucks for unlimited food and a drink. I reached in my
wallet for a tip, and I spotted a “Just Because” card from my
church. (My church has a vision to love people “just because” and
to randomly do acts of kindness for people anonymously, and just
leave them a “Just Because” card that reads “We Love You.”)

I started doing the math in my head… “I can feed that entire family
for just about 30 bucks.” Well, I slipped up to the register, and
told the cashier that I wanted to cover the bill of the family in the
corner along with my bill. I asked her to give them this card
instead of their bill, and just tell them that it’s been taken care of
for them.

I returned to my truck, and a friend that I’ve not seen in a few
years had just pulled up and began a conversation with me. We
talked for a few minutes, and then I noticed the family of 5 from
the corner booth walking out as well. The father made eye
contact with me, and I tried to just continue talking to my friend.
The father walked over and showed me the card and said “Was
this you?”

“Not really… it was Jesus.” I laughingly said with a smile. ”I just
wanted to bless you guys.”

The man shook my hand, and I could see a tear well up in his
eye. ”Sir, you have no idea how hard we’ve been struggling.”

He went on to tell me about how he’d lost his job last year, and
his wife’s been trying to compensate by supporting a family of five
with only one income. They’ve taken a very nice family vacation
every year without fail, but this year they had to scrounge every
penny they could just to be able to come down to the beach in
Gulf Shores from Birmingham. ”I couldn’t tell my kids no. None of
this was their fault.”

My friend went on inside to have lunch, and this family continued
to talk to me. I asked if they’re staying until the weekend,
because I wanted to invite them to my church. They revealed that
they’re not churched, and never have been as a family. The mom
said that they’d thought about it before, but never really got
motivated enough to do it.

On a hunch, I asked if they had ever accepted Jesus into their
hearts. ”No, we haven’t.” My stomach dropped…

“Would you like to accept Jesus? I asked. The man and wife
looked at each other, and then pulled their kids close. ”I think we
do.” the father said.

Standing in the Pizza Hut parking lot, I led a family of five through
the sinner’s prayer. Five people who just planned on stopping for
lunch on the way to the beach met their Savior yesterday. An
entire family is now united in Christ through a “Just Because” card
and all you can eat pizza! I had a study bible in my truck that I
gave them, and told them to read it together as a family. I gave
them my number and email address, and told them to call me or
contact my church if they need assistance finding a good church
in their hometown.

As we parted ways, God began to really work on me. For the first
time in many years, I realized that God can work through me
when I am obedient to His will. As I drove down the street, that
family never left my thoughts. Through my church and their vision
to see a lost and dying world know Jesus, and my obedience to
listen to Christ, there are five new names in the book of life right
now. God didn’t just change those 5 people… He changed me
too!

All of the junk that I allow to get to me in this life is really trivial
when it comes to the grand scheme of things. Yesterday, I
realized that I still have a purpose. God still has plenty of work for
me to do. As I kept driving, all of my sadness, and depression,
and fear… they didn’t exist anymore. The only thing that mattered
was the great commission… to reach the ones who don’t know
Christ.

I am not sure that I will ever look at pizza the same ever again. I
pray that every time I even smell pizza, I think of how Christ can
still use me when I turn myself fully over to Him. I also pray that
when this family drives back home, and they pass the Bay
Minette Pizza Hut, that they think to themselves “That’s where we
met Jesus.

I was finally able to get my sister-in-law to attend our Easter service Saturday night. She is a member of a church in Mobile. She also met Pastor Jerry after the service. She was so impressed that she told her sister in Mobile about her
experience and asked her to attend the Mobile service Sunday morning. This is a lady who has completely given up on God…her life has been very similar to “The Runaway” drama that we saw during the Easter service. She went to the early service and also brought her daughter and two Grandchildren…all of whom have been away from church for quite some time. I spoke with her at Easter dinner and she said she had never heard anything like the Easter sermon before, and she was going to go back and listen to it again, because she didn’t want to miss details of the message. She also said that her Grand children LOVED it. This is such a victory! Praise God for His message, and for Pastor and his commitment to His message!!

When I first noticed the “Just Because” card, it was on a stick in my flower garden. I had just returned home after from a day out with my son and a friend who was visiting us. And I thought, “who left this at my house and why?”.

Lets back up to before I found the card. My friend was in town visiting for the week and enjoying our beautiful weather. We left my house earlier that day to go the Naval museum. As we exited my front door, I said “I have to weed this garden area. But I really don’t have the time.” When we returned later that day is when I found the card. Then I notice someone had weeded my garden while I was gone! My friend said “Man, You have some great neighbors!”. And I thought “Wow, I was just talking about that before I left the house!”.

My neighbor, Sally, came over and pruned my garden area for me. Mrs. Sally is one of the most thoughtful individuals that I have ever met. I couldn’t have asked for a better neighbor! But for God to put that call in as soon as I began to worry about it was such a blessing. I could not believe it. In my neighborhood, I have been blessed with some very good neighbors. And to Mrs Sally, you are a godsend in more ways that you will ever know! Thank you and thank God for putting you in my life, Just Because. I will never forget this saying as long as I live. This story is just as illustration of God already knowing what we need before we know what we need.

Since I was a child, I have suffered from severe depression. Coming from a home where my parents were Christians on Sunday morning, Sunday night, and Wednesday night, but total heathens the rest of the week took a toll on the entire family me especially. There was a lot of hatred in our family, name calling, belittling, anything you can imagine. I was ridiculed and bullied in school, and I never felt accepted anywhere I went. Not even in church. I never felt that I was truly good enough to be around people who I considered “better than me.”

There’s always been sadness in my life that I have never been able to identify… until Monday night’s Freedom Class.

Last night at Freedom, we discussed Anger. I knew this was going to be the topic, and I really didn’t think too much of it. I don’t consider myself angry, just depressed. Someone spoke up
in class and revealed that hoarding anger that’s never dealt with creates depression. Hmm, that’s interesting. You have my attention.

I began to think of how angry I’ve been at my parents for dying like they did. “If my father would have just listened to me about taking better care of himself, he would be alive today” But
no one listens to me. “If mom would have just relaxed and not stressed herself out about so many things… she would be here too!”

God interrupted my thoughts, and whispered in my ear… “Let ME deal with all of this, this will be the year that I HEAL YOU.”

I have no idea how I held myself together after this because I felt completely different. I felt a way that I have never felt in my life. I knew God had just spoken to me, and He said something I’ve
needed to hear my entire life. All of the hurt and anger that I had been hoarding no longer mattered. God’s going to heal me! I don’t have to
be depressed anymore! I can trust people again! I CAN TRUST MY SAVIOR AGAIN!

I’ve always known that God does His thing according to HIS clock, not mine. Everything that needed to be spoken into my life was spoken, and when God
knew that He had my attention, He spoke. I’m so glad I finally listened.

I got all the letters from all those people from church and I figured the best way to respond and let people know how much they mean to me and my guys is to write you. A little background on myself for the people who will one day meet me and the old friends that will be catching up with me. I grew up in south Alabama going to Bay Community. I was there when the church was built. I can remember hurting myself playing basketball at the old church and Melanie Taylor running out to momma’s car with a bag of frozen popsicles for the pain haha!! Anyways, I ended up moving to Silverhill, going to Central Christian. I got really big into sports, and had multiple opportunities to go play college soccer or baseball. But instead I started hanging out with the wrong crowd doing all the wrong things at all the wrong times and places. I look back now and remember all the things I used to do and I actually thank God for keeping me out of trouble for all those years. I feel like God wanted me to learn from my mistakes on my own.
I moved around working at about every different job in Baldwin and Mobile Counties (I may have even built some of your houses!). I ended up going to the University of South Alabama and joined a Fraternity that shall remain nameless. Sadly, I became an alcoholic at the age 18. My first semester came to an end and I got my grades and realized that I couldn’t afford to have the title of a college student just so I could stay intoxicated so I got out and went back to construction work. Everyone always asks me “Tyler, why did you join the Marine Corps?” I never know what to say. To this day the only reason I can think of is I needed a change of pace. Something to straighten me out, which it has. I also got tired of watching things happen in society and all the people complaining about it and sitting back and watching it happen. I didn’t want to be one of the those people. I for one don’t think you should complain about war until you’ve seen it first hand. Ya’ll have no idea how much the letters ya’ll sent meant to me and my guys. Some guys got teary eyed! To the former soldiers and marines that wrote me, especially the Marine who served in 1967. I salute you sir. I also was in awe. I saw some letters from familiar names that I thought forgot about me, which may be true but im telling myself you didn’t. a lot of you im sure didn’t know that the letters were going to someone who grew up in Bay community but it meant the world to me. And anyone who gets a chance please give mrs Judy Wallace a big ole hug for me!! I just ask that ya’ll please keep us in your prayers because war is no fun. Anything can happen out here. I have been to 4 different countries so far and have to yet to got to one that wasn’t protesting. Its very discouraging. And I also need motivation cause im very upset that I wont be home for hunting season. Everyone knows that us country boys need to have our fun. Once again I thank you all for what your’e doing. Please feel free to email me at tyler.rachal@bataan.usmc.mil. I would absolutely love to hear from some old friends. Love ya’ll!!

One saturday morning recently I woke up before dawn and had a stronge sense in my spirit to drive to Bay and prayer walk around the church, so I did – thinking this was the reason the Lord woke me up and sent me to the church. But as I rounded the front corner, I was startled by seeing 2 homeless men asleep in the flower bed up against the church wall. Then I realized the real reason He sent me to the church that morning – to minister to these men.The sun was barely peeking out at this point and I asked the Lord what He wanted me to do. “go get them breakfast” – so I went to Mcdonalds and brought back breakfast and one man was stirring when I got there. I could tell they were still drunk, but I knew the Lord was orchestrating this so I was not afraid. I gave them breakfast and asked the man if I could pray for them (his friend still being out). After I prayed, he kept apologizing for sleeping at the church and kept thanking me – not for the food, but for praying for him. I asked him if there was anything else I could do for them, and he said “we just really need a tent so we’ll have somewhere to sleep”. So I told them to meet me at the Malbis Shell station in 30 minutes and I would bring them a tent. I went home, got my husband, and we went and bought a tent, 2 bibles and reading glasses to take to these precious souls. When we got to the Shell station, they were waiting for us at a picnic table and the man who I had talked and prayed with began saying to his friend “See, this is the lady who prayed for us… she prayed for us… I told you she would come back”. We talked to them a little about their lives and the love of the Lord, for them, salvation …. as we gave them the things we brought. They were so appreciative. The most touching part was what happened next. We were kneeling down in front of these men as they sat on the bench, and I began to pray for them before we left. I had my hands help open as i was praying, and after about 15 seconds, I felt one of them reach out and hold onto my hand. About the same time, the other man did the same thing. I had to open my eyes and as I looked, they both had their eyes closed with tears streaming down their faces. One man almost went into sobs. It makes me cry again just typing this. The Lord touched them that day, when they were desperate. I believe that is why they went to sleep against the walls of the church …. their hearts were seeking refuge in the Lord, and He heard and answered them by sending a person to minister to them. God uses PEOPLE. I pray God not let us forget that there are hurting, lost people everywhere around us, just waiting for someone to care. I am so thankful the Lord gave us the opportunity to pour His love and truth into these lost, hurting souls.

A few weeks ago I was driving in Fairhope to run some errands. I’m 20 years old, work three jobs and I only have one day off a week. On my off days I spend all my time running around getting things done. This day I had way more stuff to do then normal, but as I was leaving Fairhope I drove past a mom with 2 kids sitting on the side of the road. I noticed her car was very smokey and her 2 kids were about 50 feet away sitting under a shady tree. I kept driving and something told me I should turn around and see if she needed help. I didn’t want to because I was so busy but I did anyways. When I got turned back around she said she was a single mom, who recently got divorced and was leaving her home in Gulf Shores to move to Mobile. With most of her belongings in her car she packed the kids up and drove away. As she made it to Fairhope she noticed her car smoking so she pulled over and when she opened the hood the car caught on fire. She raced around the side to grab her kids out and they ran away from the car and called 911. The fire department came and put out the fire and then left. She told me she had called her Ex-husband 2 hours ago when it happened and asked him to come get her and he refused. She was stuck, and she has no family here. I convinced her to get in my car and let me take them to get some lunch. It was miserably hot outside so I know the babies needed AC and Water. I got them some waters out of my car and blasted the AC as we drove to Chick-Fil-A. We drove back to her car and sat and talked while we waited on her ride to come. She was so blessed by what I had done and didn’t understand why anyone would do something like that for someone like her. I explained to her what we were doing at Bay and she gave me a huge hug and said I was an angel of a blessing. They were such a precious family and I know I blessed them but God blessed me WAY more! :)
